Why is it called a wedding breakfast?
This is one of the questions we get asked the most.
The wedding breakfast has been one of the main wedding traditions for a long, long time. It’s the first meal that you share with your friends and family as a married couple.
The name originates from when, traditionally, the wedding ceremony took place after mass, so the entire wedding party would have fasted beforehand. This meal was the first meal of the day, so the name “Wedding Breakfast” was born. But don’t worry, no one expects you to crack open the dippy eggs or granola!
One of the most exciting (and the most delicious) parts of wedding planning Is deciding on… and sampling (!!!) your wedding breakfast and evening food! Here at Wootton Park we know that no two weddings are the same and our wedding breakfast options reflect that. We want to make sure that your first meal as a married couple reflects your personalities and your style as a couple.
There are so many different options to choose from now that people are willing to stray from tradition, so here a few options to consider…
Sticking with tradition…
The traditional, three course wedding breakfast is a firm favourite of wedding caterers and guests alike!
There are a few ways to make your wedding breakfast stand out. Why not have a sharing starter with options similar to those on a tapas menu? Not only do your guests get involved in sampling what’s to offer, they are also more likely to remember this over a soup or salad option.
Another way to spruce up your three course menu is to have a trio of desserts.. who doesn’t love three desserts at once!
something a little more relaxed…
Have you thought about having a BBQ or a High Tea?
The BBQ option gives your guests a wider choice of what they’d like to eat on the day. Typically cooked and served outside, it gives you the option to create a much more relaxed feel to your day. Fortunately, here at Wootton Park we have a full contingency plan for bad weather, meaning your BBQ can be set up and served indoors.
The High Tea menu provides you with that wonderful, summer picnic feeling. With delicious finger sandwiches and yummy sweet treats, what more could you ask for? The doors in the tractor shed open up to allow the outside to seep into the barn, giving you a fantastic, relaxing atmosphere.
a break from the norm…
Have you seen our sharing feast option? Who doesn’t love a big family roast? Pick one person per table to carve, we’ll provide the apron and chef’s hat and everyone will have a giggle whilst tucking in to a scrummy meal! It gets everyone talking on the table and provides endless entertainment!
This is a great way to represent yourselves as a couple and is guaranteed to stay in your guests memory. Whether you both love a specific cuisine, an exotic meat or a unique combination of flavours we would always say, go for it! Be the couple that offers something different to their guests and that gets people smiling.
You may need to prepare yourselves for the cost that comes with a bespoke menu but don’t be afraid to ask the caterers to create a menu within budget that offers something different.
In 2019 we had the honour of creating a full Turkish menu for a fusion wedding; we consulted with local Turkish chefs and created a menu that offered a real flavour explosion!
Street food…
A very popular style of wedding that couples have been booking lately is the twilight package. With our twilight package you have the option to get married from 4pm onwards and have a more relaxed, less formal, feel to the day. Our twilight packages are based on 60 guests and include one street food option, followed by a cheese board later in the evening.
All of our suppliers can cater for any dietary requirements that you may have, and are open to suggestions of what you might like as toppings or extras.
If you’d like to know more about our street food suppliers, check out our blog to do with all things street food! Just don’t read it on an empty stomach, we can guarantee it will get your tummy rumbling!

Kopanski Catering
All in all…
… your menu should be what you, as a couple, like to eat, don’t feel the need to bow to pressure from an opinionated family member that only eats chicken or is terrified by vegetables. Your caterer will be able to adapt the option to fulfill dietary requirements and any guests with allergies will always be catered for.
So, enjoy the process, taste the food and fill your tummies up!
Lots of love, The Wootton Park Team xx
