Winter Styling Trends
Winter Atmospherics
Right now, winter weddings are all about atmosphere and experience. Couples are thinking beyond décor and focusing on how the day will feel – the mood they want to create for themselves and their guests. They’re finding new ways to weave their story into the styling, perhaps through small details about where they met or how they got engaged. And they’re creating a feast for all the senses: subtle scents of pine, cinnamon and rosemary, the soft flicker of candlelight and rich textures that feel sumptuous and tactile.
Winter Wonderland
The classic winter wonderland theme is still a favourite, but this year it has added warmth and richness. Alongside frosty whites and silvers, couples are choosing emerald greens, ruby reds and metallic accents for a hint of shimmer. Warm white lighting creates a welcoming glow, making guests feel cosy and relaxed. We’re talking Christmas dinner vibes! The outside is coming inside, too, with winter foliage, pinecones and seasonal flowers adding a fresh, natural touch. It’s a look that works beautifully at Wootton Park, where guests can enjoy views of the frosted landscape outside while getting toasty in our converted barn.
Rustic Lodge
A rustic lodge theme is another fantastic choice for a winter wedding at Wootton Park – and it’s right on trend this year. With its exposed wood, brickwork and neutral palette, the barn already has that cosy woodland charm, so you don’t need to add much – the main elements are already there. To add a luxe feel, layer in rich textures such as velvet draping or faux-fur throws. For a dramatic effect against that gorgeous neutral background, add in pops of colour like burgundy, emerald or burnt orange. A brighter tone such as orange looks stunning paired with a winter neutral like navy, echoing those flashes of colour you see outdoors when berries catch the winter sunlight.
Statement Styling
Tablescapes are becoming more dramatic, with bold, sculptural florals defining the look. Think plinths or frames that lift floral arrangements high into the air, creating an impact while leaving space on the table below for layers of candlelight and twinkling fairy lights. The mix of elevated design and glowing light feels luxurious and full of energy – a real statement for winter celebrations.
Winter Wedding Styling Tips
1. Create magic with soft lighting
Lighting sets the mood for any wedding, and never more so than in winter. When it comes to lights, think more is more! Fairy lights add that magical sparkle, especially when reflected in glass or clustered inside lanterns and terrariums. Candles at different heights create beautiful depth and movement across your tables. At Wootton Park, the twinkling ceiling lights complement those below, so when guests walk in, they see light cascading softly through the space – pure winter magic.
2. Create intimacy with draping
For a winter wedding, you want a feeling of cosiness – that sense of Hygge that makes guests feel instantly at home. Draping is a simple but effective way to bring warmth and intimacy to your space. Layer soft fabrics from the ceiling, across tables or over chairs to create a rich, textured look. You can mix materials or colours for a luxurious, tactile feel.
3. Repurpose décor throughout the day
Repurposing décor through different stages of your wedding is a fantastic way to maximise impact. Many couples are now choosing beautiful ceremony backdrops that can be moved afterwards to create a focal point behind the top table. Later, once the tables are cleared, it can become an Instagram-worthy photo opportunity for guests. You could also move aisle arrangements into your dining space after the ceremony. And if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony (weather permitting!), you can always reuse your outdoor arrangements inside later on.
4. Go seasonal with florals
Seasonal flowers are definitely the way to go. Think amaryllis and anemone – the anemone has been the flower of the year and it’s especially lovely for winter. Fresh flowers look incredible mixed with high-quality silk or dried blooms. Eucalyptus makes wonderful foliage, adding a gorgeous scent. A stripped-back look can be stunning, too – for example, a willow arch over the ceremony area works beautifully at Wootton Park, complementing the silhouettes of the trees in the background. Picture that with chairs dressed in sumptuous fabrics and candlelit aisle arrangements overflowing with greenery, delicate woodland flowers peeping out from underneath.
5. Make it natural
Echo nature by working with odd numbers – whether that’s the candles on your table or the flowers in your arrangements. For example, a trio of Christmas trees, unadorned and each one a slightly different height, looks natural and effortlessly stylish.
6. Let it flow
You don’t need everything to match for it to feel beautifully designed. Using different but complementary elements creates interest and flow. For example, your ceremony could feature candlelight and a woodland feel, followed by a wedding breakfast surrounded by soft winter florals and sumptuous fabrics. The idea is that your day flows naturally, with each space connecting to the next.
7. Keep it beautiful and practical
It’s wonderful to get creative with your ideas, but it’s just as important to think about how everything will work together on the day. You don’t want guests brushing against berries that might stain clothes or table linens, or finding that tall arrangements block the view across the table! That’s where working with an experienced designer really helps. They’ll make sure your vision looks beautiful and works perfectly in practice, so you can relax and enjoy every moment.
There’s something really special about a winter wedding, and so many glorious seasonal ideas to choose from. It’s a wonderful opportunity to design a day that reflects your love story and captures that wonderful feeling of warmth and togetherness while the frost crackles outside.
